A High Performance Mindset....but what is Mindset?

At the Complete Athlete we talk a lot about optimizing performance and achieving a High Performance Mindset. But what're we talking about? What is Mindset?

Your mindset is how you show up every day to do the things you do; on the field, in the classroom, at home, and in every situation you face. It’s shaped and strongly supported by your beliefs but also your past experiences, and the meaning you’ve attached to them.

Your beliefs influence how you perceive everything: • whether something feels safe or dangerous
• helpful or harmful (ex: failure, stress)
• good for you or bad for you• achievable or overwhelming
• worth trying or worth avoiding

And those beliefs change the way you approach the world. They influence your emotional state, your physiology, your body language, your behaviour, and ultimately, your performance and results.
In life sometimes we just default to: “This is just the way we do things.” But many times, we don’t know why we do it that way. We just repeat it... mindlessly.


A high-performance mindset is about shifting from autopilot to awareness, opening up a curiosity to choose how you think, respond, and perform, instead of being run by old habits, old beliefs, or old stories.


This isn’t about judging yourself or forcing change. It’s about awareness and shifting beliefs to believe that change is always possible!
• Why do I approach things this way?
• Is this belief helping me or limiting me?
• Is this mindset supporting the firefighter I want to be?


Once you become aware of your mindset, you can change it. And once you change it, you open endless possibilities to change your state, your performance, and your results.

This is where you start taking your power back, focusing on controlling what you can control, understanding your experiences and learning how to work with your mind, not against it. This is the beginning of your life-changing high performance mindset.
